History of the Hinmans
Most Hinman families in the U.S. come from Sgt. Edward Hinman or John Hinman. Both were British immigrants who came to America in the early 1600's, although their familial relationship is not known. Our branch of the Hinman tree comes from Sgt. Edward. Our lineage can be verified and traced back to Sgt. Edward. We also have verified genealogy on a branch of the Scoville family dating back to the mid-14th century.
The Hinman Family crest you see on top of each of our pages is what the Hinman British ancestors used.
Most Hinmans in the United States and Britain are closely connected. At last report, there were approximately 6,000 Hinman families in the U.S. The Hinman Family database contains over 44,000 individual records going back as far as mid-1600's. Add to that the printed information we have of other branches dating back to the mid-1300's, you see the tree has gottn much bigger.
Matthew Hinman descends from the British Hinman line, the German Beuhlman line, the Garnes(Garens) line, and the Riegel line. History on the Garnes and Riegel lines is patchwork at best.
